All About Runes from Angels Forever / Windows of Light

Runes stones are an alphabet of symbols that can be used to help us understand ourselves and the surrounding world better by allowing us to ask questions and then casting the runes stones for answers.

The Origins of Rune Stones:

1377360_10152731937823840_365648059_n-1According to the “Illustrated Encyclopedia of Divination” the word “rune” means “whisper” or “secret”. Runes are a mystical symbol in use since 200 BC
The basic alphabet of 24 Runes is called the FuThark. The word FuThark originates from the sounds of the six letters. The 24 Runic signs are arranged into three families comprising 8 runes each. These individual families are called Aett (singular) or Aettir (plural). Each family or Aett is ruled over by its own particular spirit or Norse God. Respectively these entities are: Freya & Frey – Goddess and God of fertility and increase; Heindall – The watcher and the keeper of the Rainbow Bridge to the Heavens and; Tyr – War leader and spirit of the just.

The sequence of signs in each Aett has meaning as does each rune within it. Each individual rune is thought to be a “symbolic storehouse” and a “magical talisman” having its own unique set of meanings connecting a variety of things including: feelings, experiences, spirits, objects, creatures and archetypal processes.

Single Stone Reading:Almost like the makeup of an inner reality their movements in any given situation are said to be indicative of how “Wynd” or fate is operating in an individual’s affairs. The meanings of the runes are however quite fluid. Although old texts do give sets of associations for the signs there is still quite an amount that is left up to the interpretation and intuition of the individual using them.

• Clear and focus your mind.
• With the fingers of your receptive hand, “shuffle” the stones in the bag to mix them up.
• Either mentally or aloud, ask your first question and take a stone from the bag. Read the symbol inscribed on the stone.
• If you need further clarification, take another stone from the bag and interpret its symbol.
• If you find that you need yet another stone for clarification, you may want to return all the stones to the bag and rephrase your question.

Three Stone Reading
• Clear and focus your mind. Hold the bag of stones and concentrate on your intent.
• With the fingers of your receptive hand, “shuffle” the stones in the bag to mix them up.
• Either mentally or aloud, ask your question. Remove three stones, one at a time, from the bag and read each stone’s inscription before you place it on the flat surface where you are working.
• The first rune indicates the circumstances surrounding your question or the situation as it is now.
• The second rune indicates a possible action for you to take.
• The third rune suggests a likely outcome if you do take that action.

Nine Stone Reading (Nine is a magical number in Norse mythology)
• Pick nine runes at random from the pouch. Hold them between your hands for a moment, and focus on your question (if you have one).
• Then scatter the runes on the table, floor, or cloth if you have one.
• Read the runes which land face up first. These will relate to the current situation and the circumstances which led to it.
• How the runes are read is largely subjective, but in general, runes lying in the center are the most immediately relevant, while those lying around the edges are less important, or represent more general influences.
• Runes that are close together or even touching often compliment each other, or may even represent a single thing, while runes which fall on opposite sides of the pattern frequently represent opposing influences.
• Occasionally, a rune will land completely off the cloth or fall off the table. Some people consider such runes to be particularly significant, while others ignore them completely.
• Once you have looked at the runes which landed face up (and remembered which ones they are), turn over the rest of the runes without moving them from their positions. These represent outside or future influences, and will point to possible outcomes.

It is up to you to decide what the various positions and patterns in a reading mean, but once you have come up with a few general rules, try to stick with them. While consistency is very important, rune readings by their nature are very fluid, subjective things. Try not to impose too much order on your readings by inventing set meanings.
