The first poem in Appleton’s new sidewalk poetry program will be installed at City Park on July 9th at 10 a.m.
The poems were selected by a committee earlier this year. The poet selected for the first stamping will be on hand to read the poem. Five other poems will be installed at other locations in the city at a later date.
The goal of the poetry program is to transform the city’s sidewalks into an open poetry book. The idea came from a Saint Paul, MN artist who created a similar program in the Twin Cities a few years ago.
The 2014 pilot project will install the poetry adjacent to city-owned parks and buildings. Future installations could include sidewalks in neighborhoods throughout the city.
The poetry will be installed on sidewalks currently scheduled for maintenance.
Staff will also be on hand to answer any questions and to discuss the program.
