Put Your Stamp on Appleton Sidewalks this Summer

IMG_0145The Department of Public Works is now accepting submissions for its sidewalk poetry program.
Public Works Director Paula Vandehey says the program is a way to give people food for thought as they walk around the city.

“We are very excited for the second year of our Sidewalk Poetry Program as we want to grow our open-air reading experience for our residents.”IMG_0150
The program is open to all Appleton residents and Appleton Area School District students and must meet the following guidelines:

    • All residents of Appleton and students of the Appleton Area School District are eligible to submit their original poetry.
    • Poems can be previously published or unpublished, as long as it is original work by the entrant.
    • Applicants may submit one poem per year.
    • Subject matter must be appropriate for the general public.
    • Poems must be in English; must fit within a maximum of 10 lines (including title), 35 characters per line including spaces, and 225 characters overall including spaces.
    • All poems are reviewed for appropriateness for this program.

Submissions must be emailed to paula.vandehey@appleton.org by February 1.
In the first year of the program in 2014, the DPW stamped six different poems around the city under its sidewalk rehabilitation program. Appleton’s program is modeled after the sidewalk poetry program created in St. Paul, MN in 2008.
